Accumulating Good Karma

Question

Dear friend,

What is good karma? I want to accumulate good karma for my betterment in this life and for my next life (if required). Doesn’t living truthfully, honest, obedient, helpful, and possessing all good traits, accumulate good karma?

Thanks

Rajesh

Answer

Dear Rajesh,

Good karma is that which will be helpful to our spiritual growth. And, yes, living a life that is truthful, honest, serviceful and having positive traits, etc, will indeed produce good karma.

But the goal in our lives is not to just have good karma; rather we are here to go beyond all karma, good or bad. Our goal is satchidananda: ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new bliss.

Krishna teaches in the Bhagavad Gita the importance of niskam karma. The meaning of this is to act without the attachment to the fruits of our actions. We should endeavor to feel that God is the doer in all our thoughts and actions. We still need to act us instruments, but the more we attune ourselves to the divine flow then the more we are able to realize our highest fulfillment; our oneness in God.

So, we should definitely try to act in appropriate ways, and have the right thoughts, but more importantly we should try always to feel the presence of God in everything.

Blessings on your spiritual journey,
Nayaswami Pranaba
