Achieving “Thoughtlessness”

Question

How should we achieve thoughtlessness?

—A, India

Answer

Dear A,

A wise person said, The best way to give something up, is to put something else in its place.

It’s very difficult to simply stop thinking. But if we give our mind soamething else to focus on, the process will be a lot easier.

I highly recommend that you go to ananda.org’s Learn to Meditate site where you can learn the Hong-Sau technique. Yogananda said that one hour of Hong Sau practice was worth 24 hours of ordinary “sitting in the silence.” Hong sau helps you to focus on the sensation of the movement of breath — this has a quieting effect on the mind. Also a mantra and a simple movement are involved that enhance the process of stillness.

Do try the Hong Sau technique!

In divine friendship,

Anandi
