Answer

Dear One,

Interesting battles must be fought and won if one is sincerely interested in controlling one's thoughts. Our teachings teach that thoughts are universally rooted.

We can let our minds run free, or we can learn how to control our minds, body sensations, and emotions. If we want to think positive thoughts we'll have to put out some positive energy. Our mind doesn't care what it thinks about. It just likes to think. It is to say, it's up to us to train our minds to think positive and uplifting thoughts. In other words, a negative thought can come into our mind but how long it stays and the impact it has on our inner joy is up to us.

Be mindful about what you attune yourself to. What books you read, what movies you watch and what kind of music you listen to. Everything has a vibration. As yogis we want to unite our selves with that which will bring us closer to our true nature or God Realization. It is extremely important to keep our energy up. As yogis we know this to be truth. Keeping our energy flowing up the spine is a very important weapon in our battle for control over the mind and body.

Japa (mentally repeating God's name), chanting, meditating and spending time with other truth seekers also helps us to control our thoughts. Deep, devotional meditation, aerobic exercise, inverted yoga postures, proper rest, and a healthy diet are also valuable armaments in this battle.

One of my favorite affirmations by Paramhansa Yogananda is, "I will reason, I will will, I will act, but guide thou my reason, will and activity to the right thing in everything." Say this affirmation with sincerity and devotion and see how it can work for you.

Remember that you are a child of God, offer everything to him.

Joy to you,

Nayaswami Gopal
