Question

I have been doing kriya for about a year. I wanted to know if kriya is known to have any specific effect on lowering of blood pressure.

Also are there any specific yoga postures or breathing techniques related to our practice that are specifically meant for addressing hypertension?

Thanks

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

Answer

Hypertension, or high blood pressure is one of the most common physical ailments in our country.

Meditation of any sort definitely lowers blood pressure. At the Harvard hospitals all patients who come to the hypertension clinics are taught meditation as part of their treatment.

Question

i am a buddhist, i have complete faith in the buddha and his dharma. moreover i am also attracted to yoga as it is explained by yoganada in his classic autobiography. i want to be clear if i will be welcome when i approach ananda to learn kriya yoga. will my buddhist faith be a disqualification for initiation into the method of kriya yoga? does your community insist on converting to hinduism or sanathan dharma before any real empowerment can be given?

Answer

Dear Avin,

Your Buddhist faith does not disqualify you from Kriya Yoga initiation.

However, the Kriya Yoga technique does require on the meditator’s part a receptive openness and love for Paramhansa Yogananda and our other lineage of gurus.

Question

Can one be a Christian and still receive Kriya initiation?

To be a Kriya yogi does one need to become vegetarian?

Dave Warner

Answer

Christ is one of our line of Kriya Gurus, along with Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar, and Paramhansa Yogananda. In the highest sense, Kriyabans are following the teachings of Christ — not the “churchianity” or narrow sectarianism that states that there is only “one way” — but what Yogananda called “original Christianity.”

Question

Namastey Guruji

I have read the book "Autobiography of a yogi" and was inspired by the true relation between the technique in Kriya Yoga and the invention of J.C.Bose Crescograph.

Swami Paramahamsa Yogananda clearly signified that when one gets initiated into Kriya Yoga and following certain techniques he can burn his Bad Karmas and attain Enlightment. Can you please explain me clearly about this and how does a yogi attain Samadhi and Liberation with the help of Kriya Yoga.

Answer

Kriya Yoga speeds up our spiritual growth in several ways. One of them is the rapid burning up of past bad karma. According to our Kriya Gurus, kriya helps to increase the current of energy in the astral spine. This strong current carries along with it the vrittis of past karma - much like a river in flood will sweep away all the stagnant eddies and whirlpools, and carry all the old debris to the ocean.

Question

A.u..m.....

Is there any direct sishya (student) of Guru shyamacharan Lahidi/Swami Yukteswar giri or Mahabatar Babaji present in India physically. If yes how can we contact him. Pls answer.

Answer

The Guru lineage of Mahavatar Babaji and Lahiri Mahasaya continues through many lines, including Swami Kriyananda. I've heard that there are people who claim to be “direct” disciples of Mahavatar Babaji, but have never met them. Such things are easy to claim, but difficult to prove.

Question

I have been meditating according to the Ananda lessons for about eight months now. I began the second part (The Art and Science of Raja Yoga) and have been facing some health issues. I guess my question is can I be initiated into Kriya Yoga if I am unable to do the Hatha Yoga postures?

Dave Warner

Ananda Village

Answer

Hatha Yoga postures are not an integral part of Kriya Yoga practice. Many Kriya Yogis find they don’t have time for the postures. The energization exercises are more than sufficient. People with certain health problems sometimes have to adjust how they do the energization exercises. So yes, you most certainly can receive initiation into Kriya without doing Hatha Yoga!

Question

I have bouts of sciatica which makes it painful to sit at times. I have tried to do Kriya’s lying down, with my knees up, feet flat, to feel like sitting. After a few tries, it seems to work well and I don’t fall asleep. Can I do Kriyas this way?

Also, what is the differences between Hong Sau and So Hum? Are they used for different practices?

Dave Warner

Ananda Village

Answer

Ideally, of course, we should sit upright when meditating, with the spine straight.

But since our bodies don’t always cooperate with this concept of "ideal," we should adjust accordingly. When severe back problems make it impossible to sit up, then the first step would be to try and sit with some back support, against the back of a chair or a wall.
