Question

(My English not very good). I have a great desire: to find the right person, get married and have family. I am 38. I passed through bad relationships for many years. I missed lots of opportunities but now I am willing to do all the right things and take the right attitudes to maintain a good and health relationship. If it is possible that praying and beg to God he makes a miracle and send me a person very quickly and get married before getting older, before it’s too late? Please help me.

Answer

Dear Friend,

In Yogananda’s book, Spiritual Relationships, he gives the following affirmation, which he recommends practicing daily for six months:

“Heavenly Father, bless me that I choose my life companion according to Thy law of perfect soul union.”

Question

I just wanted to know your opinions on having pets at home. Does one get, for instance, "bad karma" for keeping a bird in a cage as a pet, even if it is allowed to often fly around the house?

Also, we recently got kitten but a relative has advised us that keeping a cat may be against certain Hindu beliefs. Being vegetarian, we are indeed animal enthusiasts (but not overly so); however, is it sinful to keep animals (especially cats) as domestic pets?

Thank you for the clarification.

Answer

Dear Nirmal,

This is a very thoughtful question. I have not heard or read that having a pet in the home creates bad karma. It seems to me that you have love and respect for your animal friends. If these dear souls bring you joy and you give them joy, I don’t see why this is wrong.

Question

Around the full moon I often am moody and short of temper. What can I do to keep this from occuring. Would a bangle help? Also, while on the topic of bangles, I have noticed in a photo of Master he is wearing three. Does anybody know why.

Answer

Dear Will,

In Yogananda’s autobiography, Autobiography of a Yogi, he has a chapter on astrology. You might enjoy reading this. His guru convinces him of the truth of astrology, and also encourages him, at different times, to wear two different bangles. One was the standard combination of gold, silver, and copper, and the other was lead, I believe. I don’t know about a third bangle.

Question

Have humans evolved from apes by natural selection, or are we the result of a special creation by God?

Or, moreover, does the answer include both these views?

Thanks,

Nirmal

Answer

Dear Nirmal,

Thank you for your question. According to Yogananda, man is a unique creation of God’s. He said that scientists are looking for the "missing link," but they'll never find it. He said that the human nervous system was uniquely designed by God so that human beings are capable of realizing their oneness with Him.

Could Robots have consciousness???
India

Question

Hi,

I've studied a little bit of Artificial intelligence and what i've come to understand is that Humans are an abstraction of God and what we are trying to do is make Robots an abstraction of humans.... We can emulate the human behavior and psychology into a robot..... if we achieve this and to certain level we have, does it mean that robots too have consciousness similar to us. Can robots, in future, seek God??????

Answer

The short answer is, No. The rest of my answer is an excerpt from Swami Kriyananda’s new book of essays, Religion in the New Age:

To be a complete human being means to realize one' s own full potential as a child of God. Until then, one is still only a sort of robot, functioning with varying degrees of efficiency, but unable, as yet, to go beyond merely functioning …

Answer

It is certainly good to listen to, and try to attune your own recitation with, someone who is chanting a mantra (whether Mahamrityunjaya or another) with correct pronunciation, inflection and cadence. That’s why I regularly listen to Swami Kriyananda’s Mantra CD, trying to align myself with the power of the mantra.

Question

It occured to me today that the worldwide economic crisis we find ourselves in may be the deep depression that Yogananda warned us to prepare for. Is it? What should my family and I do to prepare for it?

Anandi Cornell

Answer

Dear Aaron,

I would have to be a psychic -- and a good one at that -- to tell you if we are heading into the economic crisis Yogananda predicted. Clearly, not only America but the whole world is facing some very serious threats at this point -- economic, ecological, social, etc.

Question

Recently, I have been very interested on the subject of evolution (in terms of physical transmutations and speciation) and have thoroughly investigated the claims of both materialistic science and religious advocates. However, when it comes to HUMAN evolution, there are about as many different theories as there are people. The Vedic perspective seems to broadly agree with Darwinian evolution, but Yogananda has stated that humans were an act of special creation. Whence and how did humans emerge?

Anandi Cornell

Ananda Village

Answer

Dear Nirmal,

I don’t think anyone can answer the question of how humans emerged, since this was a creation of God. It is part of God’s plan that all souls work their way back to oneness with Him. After the souls have evolved through the mineral, vegetable, and animal level they come into human birth. Humans were designed by God to have a nervous system capable of fully realizing oneness with God.

In divine friendship,

Anandi Cornell
