God Is Always More

Being with my mom as she begins her process of transitioning from this world to the next, I find myself reflecting on the many lessons she has taught me.

I was about 18 years old and reawakening to the idea of there being a higher power in the universe but was not yet comfortable with the term “God.” However, Jesus’ message – “the kingdom of God is within you” – resonated deeply in my mind.

As I was contemplating this profound truth, I asked my mom, “If God is within us, what if God is all creatures in all of creation put together?”

Her response was simply, “God is always more.”

Usually I was quick to debate, especially when my stance was being challenged, but I knew what she was saying was true. Why? Because it was simple, stated with great faith, and without hesitation or doubt. I was left speechless but profoundly impacted.

That phrase, “God is always more,” has stayed with me for all these years. Whenever I’ve tried to confine the Infinite to any sort of limiting definition, it has been annihilated by that statement.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna reveals his Infinite nature to his disciple, Arjuna, in this thrilling passage, as Arjuna exclaims:

O Infinite Light!
Thy radiance, spreading o’er the universe,
Shines into the very darkest abyss!
Thy voice o’erwhelms the roar of cosmic cataclysms!
Lo! the myriad stars are Thy diadem;
Thy scepter radiates power everywhere!
O Immortal Brahman, Lord of all:
Again and again at Thy feet of Infinity
I lie in prostration before Thee!

My earthly mother is moving on to unite with that “infinitely something more.” I am so grateful to have had her depth of spiritual understanding, her tremendous faith, and ever-expanding love in my life.
