Paramhansa Yogananda taught that progress on the spiritual path brings increasing joy in the here and now. The spiritual life is not a thankless struggle that has its rewards only in the afterlife. God’s bliss is already part of us, waiting to be uncovered.

I had learned a valuable lesson. I realized that my worry habit reflected the mistaken notion that by thinking and fretting about the “critically important details” I had to juggle in my job, I would somehow make the situation better.

My son’s illness was a dramatic example of how adversity can remind us to call on God. I’ve come to see how valuable the difficult times are, and how we can embrace adversity as an impetus to remember to practice God’s presence.
