An affirmation is a motivational phrase used to bring about a positive change. For some people repeating one specific uplifting phrase is vitally important to their spiritual lives. It’s like doing japa (repetition of a mantra).

One Christian saint had a running dialogue with God; it was his spiritual practice to talk with God all the time.

For other people, repeating different phrases helps them face the various challenges in life.

You can use a phrase that you write on your own, or you can find one that you find inspiring and relevant to you.

One good book of affirmations is Affirmations for Self-Healing by Swami Kriyananda. It also gives a more thorough explanation of what affirmations are and how to use them.
