Paramhansa Yogananda (1893-1952) is a world-renowned spiritual teacher and author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, which was voted by a panel of scholars as one of the 100 best spiritual books of the 20th century.

Yogananda came to the United States from India in 1920 to share the teachings and technique of yoga with the West. He emphasized direct inner experience of God, which he called “Self-realization.” His teachings are nonsectarian and offer a practical approach to spiritual awakening. Stillness + Inner Absorption = Transcendence

Stillness + Inner Absorption = Transcendence – every time! This formula underlies all spiritual experience—and anyone can put it to use. No matter what teachings you are drawn to you will find meditation or intensive prayer at the heart. Learn to become ever more still, ever more absorbed, and you will find your heart-mind awareness gradually expanded, uplifted, transformed—and ultimately transcendent.

How Did Yogananda Benefit India?

Tyagi Jayadev

Question from Pushkar: Greetings. Yogananda came to India in 1935 (returning after 15 years in the West), during which India was under British rule. My question is: how did Yogananda’s visit benefit India? Didn’t the British try to harm Yogananda? After all they must have been terrified by the fact that he could have easily freed India.
