Mary Kretzmann:

Hi, my name is Mary Kretzmann. I'm the director of the Ananda Healing Prayer Ministry. You can find us at Ananda.org/prayers.

Why Chant AUM?

So today I want to talk a little bit about the chanting of AUM. One thing that Paramahansa Yogananda said is when we chant AUM, there's a slight uplift [in tone]. It's not just a monotone, AUM. That's because it's an upwardly moving energy. So I'll demonstrate that in a moment.

Why Spell AUM as A U M Instead of OM?

The other thing is that he would spell AUM, “A, U, M”, to represent the three aspects of Creation. So you have the Creator aspect of God, the Sustaining aspect of God, and the Dissolving aspect of God.

But when we're chanting AUM, I wanted to draw on the beneficial aspects of those three: creating something good, sustaining something good, and even dissolving, for a helpful reason, something. So I'm going to demonstrate the chanting of AUM three times, and then I will go into singing AUM after that.

How to Chant AUM

So, the M, with the AUM, represents the Dissolving aspects. So that's why we don't just chant Ohhhhhm. It's not like that. It's AAUUMM [sound of ooooouuummm]; you can sense how that M is part of the dissolving vibration that we're adding to this chant. So I'll chant AUM three times.

Aaauuummm, Aaauuummm, Aaauummm.

Singing AUM

I encourage you to also listen to Swami Kriyananda chanting AUM. We have a recording of it. It's available at Ananda.org/prayers, under the section on products. Likewise, the singing AUM that was given to us by Paramhansa Yogananda even more dramatically bring in this upwardly moving aspect of AUM. It goes like this.

AUM, AUM, AUM

So each of those AUMs has the principles of AUM within it, but also each one, AUM [sung] represents reaching up towards the Creative aspect of God, AUM; the Sustainer, and then the Dissolver, AUM.

Notice how they all relate to that middle note. So the Creator aspect—we're here and we're reaching up, AUM. Then the Sustainer starts there, but it's not stagnant; Sustainer is not stagnant. There's still some creative force lifting up, AUM. Then the Dissolver, bringing up whatever needs to be brought up into that central point, AUM.

AUM, AUM, AUM

And you can chant this AUM to bring helpful, balanced changes into your life. Paramhansa Yogananda said the balance of all of these three aspects of AUM is what constitutes healing, because often we need to reach out for the new, AUM, and sustain that which is good, AUM, and dissolve that which is no longer helpful, AUM.

How to Use AUM in Your Daily Life

And I'll end with...There was a devotee whose marriage was having troubles. It wasn't so much that the marriage was having troubles. It was a good marriage, but she also had a karmic connection with someone outside of the marriage. That was what was causing the troubles.

And so I told her to chant AUM this way, because she was a deep soul. And the light went on in her mind when she realized that AUM, bringing in the new, and then, AUM, sustaining that which was good, which in her case was the marriage, and then, AUM, dissolving that which was not helpful.

And what was not helpful was her working in close proximity with this other good soul, as well. So she decided to end that close proximity in her work life, and then her marriage was saved and happy, and it's been many, many years and they're still happy.

So again, think of it applied in your own life. You want to bring in the new, sustain that which is good, but dissolve that which is no longer helpful.

I'll close with that singing of AUM. May it bless you in body, mind, and soul at this time.

AUM, AUM, AUM

AUM, AUM, AUM

AUM, Peace, Amen
