The following quote from Paramhansa Yogananda is a tremendous reminder of how the law of abundance works: “Divine Abundance follows the law of service and generosity. Give and then receive.  Give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you.”

During the difficult financial times we are experiencing, I think it is a good time to remember how the concept of tithing is directional, just like all our spiritual practices. This story from a fellow tither says it all:

I have a modest income and because I am self-employed, it is sometimes unstable. The first month I tithed, I felt so nervous about “making ends meet” that I could only bring myself to send $50. But I wanted to try it, so each month I sent a little more until I was up to 10%. I was amazed to be sending off 10% of my income with no shortage of funds.

I have had a large, outstanding credit card debt for many years. Although I stopped using the card long ago, my efforts at paying off the account were proceeding at a snail’s pace. This was mostly because I always feared that if I made a big payment I would not be able to cover bills later in the month.

Well, the month in which I finally tithed 10%, I thought to myself, “This is crazy. I know God supports me in paying off the debt!” I sent in a payment for every penny that was in my checkbook. Financially, the rest of the month went fine! Since then I have continued paying off this debt at a greatly accelerated rate that I previously would have thought impossible. My fear of “not having enough” has evaporated—because I handed my finances over to God. – L.L

If you need to, cut back on your tithing, but don’t stop. During difficult times, keep a lifeline attached to the Divine. When life gets hard and you still strive toward the right attitude, and give yourself to God, you grow spiritually.

If finances are tough don’t worry about giving 10 percent. Give what you can comfortably, but be regular. There is a magic in giving 10 percent, but that might not be feasible right now. God watches your heart, not your wallet.

Joy to you!

    1. Hello, Natanja.
Are you thinking of Yogananda’s Law of Success? It’s available from Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), its publisher. An online search brings a result of a free online PDF version. The “Law of Abundance” is the name of an SRF booklet related to making charitable donations. You might also be interested in Money Magnetism: How to Attract What You Need When You Need It, written by J. Donald Walters (Swami Kriyananda). I hope this answers your question.
