Children of God, Yet Also Unborn and Eternal?

Question

if we are unborn and eternal , how can god be our father ?

—Hemendra Pal Singh, India

Answer

Dear Hemendra Pal,

The “father” metaphor commonly used in spiritual teaching can be a bit misleading if we think only in human terms: that we do not exist until we are physically born. In divine terms, we are—and always have been—part of God, and because God is unborn and eternal, so are we.

Yet God is also our father in the sense that, at some time in the history of creation, He gave us (i.e., He gave parts of Himself) a sense of individuality and started us off on the cycle of reincarnation.

So yes, we are unborn and eternal, as well as children of God.

Blessings,
