Answer

Dear J,

I’m sorry to hear of your “spiritual slump,” but the truth is, it happens to everyone. The way out of it depends on the specific nature of the slump, which I do not know, but I can offer a few general thoughts.

First, you need to spend time with other spiritual seekers. As Paramhansa Yogananda often said, “Environment is stronger than will.” The magnetism of other seekers will be of immense help to you. If there are none in your area—which is doubtful—you will find much inspiration on the Ananda.org website in the form of free video and audio. Also, Online with Ananda offers a “virtual community,” which can be an environmental lifesaver.

Second, a slump of any kind often causes us to collapse in upon ourselves, which only reinforces the slump. One key to getting out of ourselves is service to others. It will help you generate more energy and build an expansive attitude.

Third, when we’re in a slump, we often focus on what we’re not getting, rather than what we’re not giving. I wrote an article on this some years ago for (what was then called) Clarity Magazine. I suggest you read it.

Finally, keep at it. Don’t allow yourself to get discouraged. Yoganandaji said that discouragement is delusion’s greatest weapon.

I wish you all the best.

Blessings,
Nayaswami Gyandev
