Are Yogananda’s Teachings Hinduism, Or Something Else?

Question

Recently I discovered the work of Yogananda and find a great alignment of my beliefs and practices therein. Is the study of P. Yogananda Hinduism, or something else?

Answer

Dear Lisa,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad you’re finding a support for your beliefs and practices in the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda. Perhaps you have read his Autobiography of a Yogi?

Yes, these teachings are based in Hinduism, in a sense. More specifically, Yoganandaji’s teachings are Yoga, which is one of the six systems of philosophy of Hinduism.

There are several kinds of Yoga, and Yoganandaji concentrated on Raja Yoga, the “royal” or “kingly” yoga, which includes meditation.

Finally, among the several kinds of Raja Yoga, Yoganandaji taught specifically kriya yoga.

Best wishes on your journey!

Joy to you,
