Answer

Dear Nalini,

The masters tell us the eyes are the window to the soul. That being said, the masters also warn us not to stare directly into the eyes of someone we don’t know well because we could get drawn into their magnetism. Looking into the eyes of someone who has dark or negative energy we may feel the effects of their negative energy. Of course looking into the eyes of a realized master will lift our spirits to new heights. I love starring at pictures of Yogananda’s eyes. Looking into his eyes works like magic to change my perspective on life.

Remember, if we sincerely inwardly love God nothing can harm us. The ego can be harmed but the soul cannot be harmed, not by wind not by rain or not by fire. When we identify with the ego we perceive negativity or fear as real. Fear or (negativity as per your letter) can be defined as Feeling Ego As Real or False Evidence Appearing Real. Either way of thinking is incorrect thinking. God is our only reality. And only by loving Him more and deeper each waking moment can we keep negativity from “harming” us.

When we feel negativity it is extremely important that we call on God. A powerful prayer I like to recite to my self when I feel negativity is, God, Christ, Guru, or, don’t change the situation Lord, change me. These are simple but powerful prayers that can change our perception of reality. We have to keep praying until you feel God’s Grace. Choose to feel God’s grace not the negativity. God’s grace is always with us. We have to remember to tune into it.

Swami Kriyananda has said, “We can’t beat the darkness away with a stick. We have to turn on a light.” Pray, visualize and imagine a beautiful light flowing in and around all involved. Then watch the negativity goes away like a light takes away the darkness. Jesus experienced a tremendous amount of negativity while dying on the cross. His prayer, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do,” is an effective lesson of the power of forgiveness.

Remember this is God’s dream. We are all actors in His divine play. Someone has to play the part of a villain so we can play the part of a divine being. Pray & demand the Powers to Be bring forth your divinity. And know this to be true, God never gives us more than we can handle.

In His joy,

Nayaswami Gopal
