Answer

Dear Vivek,

I am very sorry to hear of your brother’s tragic passing. It is indeed difficult to understand why a good life can end at a time that seems too early.

There are several things to keep in mind: First, the great masters assure us that those who have had a spiritual orientation will find themselves in a place of beauty and happiness in the astral world. Those left behind may grieve, but your brother is in great joy, and he wants you to be happy as well.

Second, we cannot know the intricacies of karma, and why your brother’s karma has swept him away. We can only take the great master’s word that God is loving and just, and He is making sure that what needs to happen for your brother, is happening. Your brother’s departure was not “too early”; it fit the divine plan for his life, just as it fit the divine plan for your life. Try to find space in your heart to feel this truth, for it will bring you much relief.

Third, the feelings of those left behind, such as yourself, are felt by the departed soul. If your feelings are of sadness, injustice, and attachment to him, it can actually weigh him down. Instead, send him your love and gratitude for having been a part of your life, and your best wishes for his happiness. He will feel it and be strengthened.

Finally, please know that your brother will not have suffered the pain in passing that you imagine him to have suffered. When the soul is about to leave the body, it withdraws a bit and does not experience the same pain that the body experiences.

Your love will draw the two of you together again. For now, walk your path without him physically by your side, and know that your separation is only temporary—and at a soul level, there is no separation at all.
