Be Careful About Your Spiritual Practices!

Question

I have been mantric chanting. When I finish the mantric alphabet I inflate my lungs, close the bandas at throat and groin and hold my breath. The energy comes fizzing up from my feet to my head. This effect has been growing stronger. The last time I did it there seemed to be great pressure in my head and a peculiar sound. The next thing I knew my eyes were open, I was holding on to the table in front of me in a state of bewilderment. What is happening and can it be dangerous?

Answer

Dear Rebecca, What you are describing are, most likely, some form of “kundalini yoga” techniques. These definitely can be dangerous (and cause severe damage) to your central nervous system! I would definitely suggest that you cease doing them, right away, and seek a more gentle approach to your spiritual practices. You also need personal guidance in the form of a guru or spiritual teacher(s) to help you. My recommendation to you would be the path of Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda. It is gentle and yet very powerful and effective to help you advance spiritually, in a reasonable amount of time and with daily practice. If you want guidance for doing this, please let us know. Blessings and joy to you!
