During Meditation the Crystal I Am Holding Is Getting Warm – Why?

Question

I notice that sometimes while I meditate, the crystal that I am holding gets warm. Yesterday, I put a tiger’s eye gem on my belly and when I finished the meditation, it was hot. I would like to know why this happened?

Answer

Dear Sara,

Crystals are very special stones. They receive and transmit energy. This is the reason why Swami Kriyananda called his home Crystal Hermitage. He writes:

“Quartz crystals are used in receiving, amplifying, and transmitting radio signals. Crystals have also been found to function similarly with other energy signals… For the ability of crystals to amplify the energies they receive coincides with what I consider a vital property of Crystal Hermitage.”

So your crystal might have received a lot of energy from your meditation, and then amplifying and transmitting it, even to the point of developing warmth.

At Ananda we use a bangle of three metals which Yogananda recommended. The reason for it is that pure metals, as Sri Yukteswar explains in Autobiography of a Yogi, are also powerful transmitters of energy, thereby helping us:

“Just as a house can be fitted with a copper rod to absorb the shock of lightning, so the bodily temple can be benefited by various protective measures. Ages ago our yogis discovered that pure metals emit an astral light which is powerfully counteractive to negative pulls of the planets. Subtle electrical and magnetic radiations are constantly circulating in the universe; when a man’s body is being aided, he does not know it; when it is being disintegrated, he is still in ignorance. Can he do anything about it? This problem received attention from our rishis; they found helpful not only a combination of metals, but also of plants and – most effective of all–faultless jewels of not less than two carats. The preventive uses of astrology have seldom been seriously studied outside of India. One little-known fact is that the proper jewels, metals, or plant preparations are valueless unless the required weight is secured, and unless these remedial agents are worn next to the skin.”

A friend told me that sometimes, in times of trial or sickness, his bangle of three metals (gold, silver, copper) actually became hot, as if it were absorbing the troublesome energy. Maybe your gems have done the same? Again, crystals both receive and radiate energy. Maybe the tiger’s eye has a similar function.

A completely different thought: you say that during your meditation you placed your tiger’s eye on your belly. Do you lie down during meditation, or lean backward? If so, such postures aren’t actually recommended by most yogis, including Yogananda. It is preferable to sit straight, relaxed, and still.

May your crystal continue to radiate beautiful energy,
Jayadev
