How to Develop Concentration

Question

I am not able to concentrate on anything. There is always something happening in my mind i.e. self-talk. I am not able to have sound sleep. If I close my eyes then some visuals start and self-talk also. I am tired now. If I am sitting idle, my mind always jumps from one thought to another thought. It’s like reading any book without opening our mouth. Always imaging. I don’t know how to explain you. Lack of concentration on one topic

Answer

Dear Vishwanath,

Paramhansa Yogananda gave a very effective technique known as Hong-Sau that I would recommend to you. It allows you to deepen your concentration with a combination of 1) observing your breath without any manipulation; 2) tuning into the mental sounds of Hong-Sau, along with the inhalation and exhalation, to aid in going deeper within; and 3) having the mental gaze turned upward to the spiritual eye — the point mid-way between the eyebrows.

In utilizing a technique such as Hong-Sau we can more readily bypass the distractions of the mind, i.e. “the self-talk”, and develop our innate ability to be more fully concentrated.
Here’s a link for the Hong-Sau technique.

Blessings on your spiritual journey.
