In Prayer, Should We Ask God for Things?

Question

Given that the Divine is all-compassionate and all-knowing, knows exactly what we need, and is forever orchestrating the best for us, why should we ask at all in prayer? Shouldn’t prayer only be about expressing gratitude for whatever we get, in whatever form that it may be? I feel the Divine presence in my life so deeply and miraculously. So when I sit down to pray or engage with God, I don’t feel like asking at all. I just want to be with the presence. However, am I missing out by not asking?

Answer

Dear Pooja,

It is a great blessing that you feel so deeply connected. Of course, this is how it should be. It is our soul’s destiny and nature to know this truth.

But of course it isn’t that way for most people who pray and seek to know the Divine Presence. And it’s also true that most people, even people of goodwill, have many desires, fears and needs. Whatever the case may be for others, reaching out or up to God is, for them, what they feel they need to do. This is so whether for material or spiritual needs.

So be a beacon of light, faith, and hope for others!

Blessings to you!
