Answer

Dear Paarth,

What the Nicene creed says should be understood more deeply. Jesus, like Krishna and other avatars, has realized in his soul (atman) that he is Brahma: one with the Father. The English word “only” must not be understood to mean (though many Christians do mean it) that Jesus Christ is the only soul in all existence to have achieved Self-realization. Christians have yet to accept the truth of such statements as St. John the Apostle when he wrote “And as many as received Him to them gave He the power to become the sons of God.”

We each are made in the image of God: Tat twam asi (“thou art that”). We each have the potential to achieve moksha, realization of God. The true (sat) guru has the power to uplift those who will “receive” into their lives the guru’s vibration, teachings, and instructions. It may take many lives but it is our soul’s destiny to awaken to the desire to be free.
