Question

Is Ajna chakra located between the eyebrows or the point in the center above the eyebrows? I’ve always been confused, some say it’s between the eyebrows and some say it’s above the eyebrows in the center. And the web images say above the eyebrows. Can you please clarify its exact location, since I want to meditate on it correctly?

Answer

Dear Tusha,

Chakras, including the ajna (or agya) chakra, also referred to as the 6th chakra, are spinal energy centers —  elements of our astral or energy body. They do have their counterparts in the physical body, but directing our attention solely to a physical location really misses the point. In meditation, if our body and mind become quiet, we begin to be aware of these subtle energy centers. At the ajna chakra we may behold the spiritual eye, the portal to cosmic consciousness.

Where is Ajna Chakra Located

The 6th chakra’s counterpart in the physical body is slightly above, not directly between the eyebrows. In meditation first turn your attention to that physical point in the forehead. When sitting to meditate it helps to uplift the eyes as if looking at a distant mountain peak. To help with the correct eye position, hold your upturned thumb out in front of you, and lift it to be in line with the top of your head. Train your eye gaze at your thumbnail and relax the arm down. Thus the eyes are uplifted above the horizon line but not with our eyes rolled up in our head in an extreme position which would cause a headache. The eyelids then can be closed, or possibly half-open, as we maintain this uplifted gaze. In meditation tune into the energy at that point and offer yourself into that energy. Here is a link to a guided spiritual eye meditation, as well as a painting that Swami Kriyananda, Ananda’s founder and direct disciple of Yogananda, did of what the spiritual eye looks like when seen completely.

Many blessings,
