The Spiritual Eye

Question

When I close my eyes I see a real eye. I see a gold eye, lots of blue, also beautiful patterns, I have never tried to meditate, this has come naturally. Now I have started to see orbs all the time, beautiful shimmers of light. Is this all connected? Regards, Jean

Answer

Dear Jean,

Some people have visual experiences that are not a result of the physical power of sight. These visions may come at times in meditation and or at other times. These visions can be associated with higher or lower states of consciousness. When a vision comes from a higher state there is peace, calmness, joy or some type of uplifted consciousness associated with it. Visions from lower states have associated emotional reactions that may be negative, cloudy, or restless. You will have to assess for yourself what quality of consciousness accompanies your visual experience. Yogananda taught that it is important not to become distracted or attached to any particular inner visual experience. Even uplifted visions can feed the pride of the ego if we become attached. Offer up all spiritual experiences that come to you into the Divine Presence.

What you describe is not the Spiritual Eye that is seen in deep meditation. There is a spiritual center at the point between the eyebrows which is our doorway into Infinite Divine presence. It is where we connect with our Higher Self, our Soul awareness. In meditation we place our concentration there and direct all our energy to that point. This center is variously referred to as the Spiritual Eye, the Ajna Chakra, the Third Eye, the center of Christ Consciousness or Krishna Consciousness. We perceive the Spiritual Eye through inner vision and not our actual eyes. Many people do see the Spiritual Eye, even those who have not had much experience with meditation. When the Spiritual Eye is beheld clearly, it is a golden circle of light surrounding a field of deep blue. In the center of this blue field is a white star with five points. When the Spiritual Eye is beheld imperfectly, it is seen as a dim violet light with a faint circle around it, and an even fainter dot in the center.
