Are These Experiences in Meditation Normal?

Question

I have been experiencing a range of different things since starting meditation but need to ask about a few. Lately I have a feeling of electric shock through my body. I have this when awake normally and more so when meditating. It’s mainly through my head and legs and almost gets painful. I also randomly have points on my body that vibrate, even when fully awake. There is a constant feeling of energy moving on my forehead and around my eyes. Please advise what I can do to get over this.

Answer

Dear Sheldon,

It isn’t normal to experience these uncomfortable sensations with the meditation techniques taught by Paramhansa Yogananda. It is normal to experience a comfortable flow of energy from the senses up the spine to the frontal lobe of the brain when practicing deep meditation.  If you are practicing Yogananda’s techniques; Hong Sau, Aum, and Kriya, please check with a trained teacher with Ananda or SRF to make sure you are practicing them correctly.

Yogananda and Swami Kriyananda cautioned against the practice of breathing and meditation techniques that overstimulate the kundalini energy at the base of the spine. Thus, if you are practicing such techniques they can be destructive to your nervous system.

You may want to see a doctor about your sensations as Lyme disease and Bartonella, both tick born infections, can cause electric sensations, fasiculations and tremors.

May you discover the underlying cause of your unpleasant sensations and experience more peace, love and joy in your meditations.

In Divine Friendship.
