Answer

Dear Charu,

Your question has been asked by countless truth seekers. Paramhansa Yogananda often answered this question with, “You will know when you will know.” What he meant was that only when we achieve oneness with God, we can fully understand God’s creation.

There are many attempts to answer this question, but none is truly satisfying for the human mind is not able to comprehend the true nature of God’s creation.

Here is what Paramhansa Yogananda said, that might be helpful:

God created us in His image, to enjoy himself through others. He gave us free choice. By misusing our free will, we created our own suffering, and therefore our own karma.

Karma is the law of cause and effect: as you sow, so shall you reap.

If you sow evil, you will reap evil in the form of suffering. And if you sow goodness, you will reap goodness in the form of inner joy.

Our karma is the sum total of all our actions, and thoughts from all past lives, all our habits, desires, psychological and mental tendencies.

The way out of karma is to be guided from within, not by our egoic desires, but by attuning to God’s wisdom and following it.

When we live in our own center, we live in soul consciousness, and we are no longer controlled by past habits and desires.

We can free ourselves from karmic slavery by daily meditation, by deeply communing with God, through the silent voice of intuition.

You can learn more about how to overcome karma in Karma and Reincarnation by Paramhansa Yoganada.

I hope this is helpful.
