The use of astrology

How relevant is astrology in making decisions in my life?

The ancient science of yoga includes astrology as a tool or a means to help us in our spiritual unfoldment. Its true purpose is to give us guidance to deepen our inner practices and create balance in our outer lives, thus bringing us to our Self-realization.

The trick is to not get caught up in “depending” on astrology or be completely defined by it. One way to approach an astrological reading is to view it as revealing flows of energy and awareness that are being highlighted so we can grow spiritually in whatever decisions lie before us.

There is a wonderful chapter, entitled, “Outwitting the Stars” in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda that is very helpful in relating to astrology. Here is a quote: “Superstitious awe of astrology makes one an automaton, slavishly dependent on mechanical guidance. The wise man defeats his planets — which is to say, his past — by transferring his allegiance from the creation to the Creator. The more he realizes his unity with Spirit, the less he can be dominated by matter. The soul is ever-free; it is deathless because birthless. It cannot be regimented by stars.”
