Does Money Inhibit Spiritual Growth?

Question

Hi .I have a question about money. Money should be used to meet the basic necessities of life, Yogananda said, and nothing more. What it means that I can't enjoy things that comes for example like results of helping others? If the money should be used only for basic necessities why i have to accept material wealth that comes from the universe or God ? Osho Said that the new human Being will have a higher consciousness and the same time will enjoy everything that existence can offer

Answer

Dear Andi,

Yogananda-ji never said that. He said enjoy all things with the joy of God. Krishna was a prince; so, too, Arjuna and King Janaka. There have been saints in Christianity, too, who were royalty. It is attachment to possessions that binds, not the possessions themselves. It is true that wealth is a great temptation and test but those few who can rise above the temptation and use their wealth for God’s work and in service to others can rise high spiritually.

There is a letter which we possess in which Yogananda thanks a student for a donation and which he says that “Making money to serve God’s work is the greatest thing next to God-realization.” Perhaps a slight exaggeration, but the point remains. It is not what we do or have but with what attitude we think and act and with what divine attunement  we live. ok?

Blessings to you!
