Experiencing Pressure in Temples during Meditation

Question

Since few days I have a pressure on my both temples. I mean it's very nice feeling. I enjoy that moment when I breathe in and out, i can feel them tight. Can you please answer, why it is happening and that too so suddenly? Thank you Guruji

—Venkatesh, India

Answer

Dear Venkatesh,

Experiencing pressure in the temples is not a part of deep meditation experience. You might be inadvertently tensing the muscles in that area in an attempt to concentrate at the point between the eyebrows. In meditation we direct people to bring their awareness to that point because it is the physical location of an important spiritual center called the ajna chakra. It is also called the spiritual eye, the Christ or Krishna consciousness center, and is a doorway to union with the divine. This chakra is an energy center and we must be relaxed to experience it. The ‘nice feeling’ that you associate with the sense of pressure maybe because you are directing your attention to the general area of this chakra and away from restless thoughts.

I encourage you to keep up your meditation efforts. If you would like to learn more about meditation practice our Lessons in Meditation book is available in India https://anandapublications.com. On our ananda.org website there is a free online meditation mini-course. When you access either of these resources you will be directed to a treasure trove of additional meditation training and guidance.
