Gaining Control Over the Mind and Body

Question

Is it necessary to exercise to get control over your mind or meditation is enough. I have started meditating on Om for a few days, I am getting a firm control over my mind but will it get over to the body as well or I will have to do some physical exercise(since I am unfit).

—Kanishk, India

Answer

Dear Kanishk,

Usually the effects of meditation on the body manifest slowly, with the time varying from person to person. Since you describe yourself as physically “unfit,” developing a program of physical exercises to accompany your daily meditation practice might be the best course of action for you.

The Energization Exercises developed by Paramhansa Yogananda, when practiced regularly, not only strengthen and revitalize the body physically, but are also spiritually beneficial. I’ve been practicing them for many years and can personally attest to their benefits.

Affirmations are also very helpful for developing and strengthening new attitudes. You might want to consider obtaining the book, Affirmations for Self-Healing by Swami Kriyananda, which contains fifty-two affirmations.

Many blessings,
