Answer

Dear Subramanian,

Ah! The battle of life! Read the beloved Gita as often as you can. I can recommend my teacher’s magnum opus: The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita by Swami Kriyananda.

Lahiri Mahasaya of Benares (1826-1894 approx) was a householder and accountant and a great saint who re-introduced kriya yoga to the world With Babaji’s approval, the practice of kriya is spreading throughout the world and includes householders. Lahiri demonstrated how to live in this world without attachment: nishkam karma! Read Autobiography of a Yogi and see Chapter 35: The Christlike Life of Lahiri Mahasaya!

Though in past centuries and within our own hearts there seems to be a conflict between the world around us and our needs to be engaged in it and the inner call of the soul. But that need not be so provided the basis of one’s life is attunement to the Divine Will through right attitude and daily sadhana.

Performing one’s proper duties to oneself, family and country as an act of devotion can free one from the three-fold suffering to which we are heir.

The worldwide work of Ananda includes the establishment of intentional, spiritual communities and ashrams for devotees in all walks of life. Inspired by the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda and his lineage who sent him out into the world (which includes Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya and Swami Sri Yukteswar of Bengal), Ananda communities and ashrams exist as proving grounds for this way of life being “in the world but not of the world!”

It can be done and indeed, for our own salvation and for the example given to others, it needs to be done.

Never miss your daily appointment with God and gurus through sadhana, study, seva and devotion and you will become ever free. I recommend learning kriya yoga from Ananda in India. (AnandaIndia.org)
