Answer

Dear Friend,

I am most sorry to hear these troubles for you, both in outer life and the inner path! Here are some thoughts to share with you:

  • The more we focus on devotion and inner stillness, offering the ego-self to the great Self of God, the more we cleanse the subconscious mind and its numerous karmas, samskaras and vrittis. However, let me point out that we start with the conscious mind and offer the conscious mind (thoughts, feelings, and actions) to God at the spiritual eye (point between the eyebrows) and throughout the day. Past karmas, hidden in the subconscious mind, can be released later after we have achieved enlightenment (nirbikalpa samadhi). Do not, therefore, be overly concerned about the past or the subconscious mind. Deep meditation brings light into the subconscious mind but it is enough to uplift the conscious mind (for now).
  • No saint has ever lacked energy and enthusiasm even for his/her daily duties and opportunities. A sadhu, yogi, or guru might not have desires for the things of this world, but he/she will have lots of energy for helping others and for focusing on sadhana. Therefore losing interest in life may only be a small step or phase in your spiritual life.
  • No matter how small your task during the day, do it with ENTHUSIASM, focused interest, and excellence! Joy is the nature of the Self: Satchidanandam. To feel joy, ACT joyful! Help others in your house, neighborhood, or place of work. As Swami Kriyananda taught us: say YES to life! Remember: your duties, including care for your body, home, and support, are given to you by God. Embrace them with gratitude.
Gratitude for life is the attitude that can break the spell of lethargy! As Jesus commanded the man who could not walk: “Get up and walk. Carry your bed back to your house!”
  • When you approach your studies, affirm to yourself that Divine Mother is in those pages; in those facts; in those papers you must write; and, in the examinations you must take. She wants you to learn and to be successful in your duties. Do it FOR Her; do it WITH Her; let HER do it THROUGH you!
  • Every day practice smiling! First in the mirror to start the day. Then smile and greet friends, family, fellow students, and all whom you meet. Be a SMILE MILLIONAIRE!

A saint once said: “If you ONLY knew how much God loves you, you would die for JOY!”

Go into the world with the love and joy of God in your heart!
