Premonitions in Dreams

Question

My mother had a dream two days before she got ill and was admitted to the hospital. So, I want to know how dreams come true? Because this is not the first time that her dream came true. We have seen this a number of times. She has dreams indicating what is going to happen in future, or why it's happening, or what might happen if care is not taken. Moreover her dreams have become a guiding factor in our lives to warn us every time about the hurdles to come.

Answer

Dear Sonu,

In the ancient teachings of India which Yogananda brought to the West there is the understanding that in God there is no limitation of space or time. As Yogananda wrote in his beautiful poem “Samadhi:”

Present, past, future, no more for me,
but ever-present, all-flowing I, I, everywhere.
Planets, stars, stardust, earth,
Volcanic bursts of doomsday cataclysms,
Creation’s molding furnace,
Glaciers of silent x-rays, burning electron floods,
Thoughts of all men, past, present, to come,
Every blade of grass, myself, mankind,
Each particle of universal dust,
Anger, greed, good, bad, salvation, lust,
I swallowed, transmuted all
Into a vast ocean of blood of my own one Being!

You can read the entire poem here: Samadhi / Whispers From Eternity.

In samadhi, the state of union with God that may be experienced by deep meditators, our consciousness is completely attuned to the divine consciousness. When so attuned, visions of future events are possible. In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Yogananda relates that as a boy he was traveling with his father when he was awakened from sleep with a vision of his Mother calling to him to come home right away as she was dying. His mother had been perfectly well when they left. Yogananda implored his father to travel home but his father doubted and delayed so when they arrived she had already passed away. Yogananda also related times when his guru, Sri Yukteswar, saw into the future including his own death. Yogananda himself gave hints about future events including his own passing.

Some people may get flashes of awareness of some aspect of this expanded consciousness from time to time even if they do not dwell in superconscious awareness like great masters. I wonder if your mother has such an opening in some of her dreams. Your mother’s premonitions are not making something come true. To the extent that her dreams are accurate, she is tuning into higher consciousness where past, present, and future are no longer separate.

Many Blessings,
Nayaswami Mukti
