Should We Have a Child?

Question

We are in our early 30s, married for 2 years and going through this deep confusion where we are not sure whether to have a child or not. We are thinking about how stagnant our lives would be some years later without a child. It makes us crave for children and on the other side knowing that each soul trapped in body has to go to endless trials to evolve, makes us dispel the thought of having a child & the attachment it would bring. We can play it safe without a kid. Even Swami Kriyananda once said said, "Why need a body?" Please help.

Answer

Dear Tanvi,

Souls will find birth according to their karma. You do not need to be concerned that having a child will be the cause of a child’s “endless trials.” Rather think of it this way: as spiritually minded parents, you can help your child to work with his or her karma in the best way. Therefore, if being married and young, you both “crave” having a child, then it makes the most sense to do so.

Paramhansa Yogananda gave a specific recipe for how couples can attract a spiritually minded soul into your family. I won’t give the entire formula here since that is not your question but a couple CAN apply their will power and intention if they wish to attract a spiritually minded soul. Ok?

Blessings upon you both!
