Why Did God Create a Universe So Full of Pain?

Question

A dog is beaten to death by humans and then I remember that the Bhagavad Gita says that God is the only Doer, we think its us acting, because of maya. Then how can such a barbaric act happen? Why would God create a universe that is so full of pain and suffering? For us to find Him if/when we are already Him? Where is the compassion, the kindness, the love?

—Suchie, India

Answer

Dear Suchie,

Yes, God is the Doer, but He has given us a brain and a heart. These are filters. His pure energy can become barbaric through us humans.

Why did He create a universe which allows such suffering? It is a truly a drama and you are right: after a lot of suffering we find Him, and our true Self in Him, something we already had.

In the meantime there much of life is without compassion, kindness, love. Yogananda too had “discussions” with God, saying: “Why do you allow all this suffering”.

In the end it was only all a dream. Nobody dies, nobody gets really hurt, only the surface. I know, since we, and the animals, simply are on the surface, it really does hurt, and seems so real and can be highly painful. Yet in the end there will be only a big laughter: all this was nothing more than a big dream, a light-and-shadow projection, with a wonderful Happy End.

Nobody likes suffering, and the animals certainly neither. But all this will be balanced out in the end and we will all exclaim, after so much drama:

“Well done Lord, it was a great and marvellous show.”

So let’s hurry to Him while spreading love, sharing kindness, being human, and doing what we can to save animals from all that cruelty.

In divine friendship,
